Let Jesus Look into the “Well” of Our Hearts

Our Bible Class on Mondays is great. We are studying Mark’s Gospel and one of the features of his gospel is how he often writes specific details into the text. Things like the green grass of a place, or how, “Jesus was in the stern, asleep on a cushion…” Our gospel this week is another gospel that mentions details that may not seem significant at first…but every word of the Gospel is inspired. John’s Gospel account of the Samaritan woman at the well is rich and inspiring. I would point to a few small details worth pondering.

The first is the well. The Samaritan woman mentions how deep the well is (and that Jesus has no bucket). How deep indeed! In the exchange with Jesus, we get a good look into the “well” of the Samaritan woman’s heart…and the depth of that well. We all have a well…deep…and known by Jesus. Known every bit as much as Jesus knows this woman. Treasured and honored every bit as much as Jesus shows in this Gospel. This Lent we can listen more to what our Savior wants us to know about our well…it is deep…and He doesn’t need a bucket.

Another small detail worth pondering is the water jar the Samaritan woman brought to the well. After her talk with Jesus, John writes that, “The woman left her water jar and went into the town…” As we continue this Lenten season, we can consider the grace of God and the living water we received in baptism. That living water that is meant to keep flowing throughout our lives, bringing blessings and life to those around us. The Samaritan woman left her water jar to bring news of the Messiah. Perhaps we can also consider what “water jars” we need to leave behind in our lives, as we listen to Jesus and His words of life and healing…
