“As for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.”
(Joshua 24:15)
This weekend is orientation for our families with children in Religious Education here at San Pedro, and the readings at Mass could hardly be more appropriate. Joshua has led the Israelites into the Promised Land, and as they settle into their new home, he challenges them. “Whom will you serve?”
God has already brought them out of slavery, fed them with manna in the desert and brought them safely home. God’s blessings are not contingent on their response. Even after all this, they are free to decide whom they will follow, and they need to make a choice. They are not slaves, but a free people.
Joshua declares his allegiance “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” His decision becomes a model and encouragement for others, but each one must make his or her own response.
In the Gospel, Jesus clearly tells us of the free gift he gives to us – his flesh as real food, his blood as real drink, given and poured out to give us life. Many walk away because they find it hard to accept this gift. And Jesus asks even those who remain, “Do you also want to leave?” Peter’s answer is a model and encouragement for us, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of evelarsting life.” (John 6:68)
To our families who are bringing their children for religious instruction, you are answering this question. Whom will you serve? Will you continue to follow Christ? You want your children to learn about God and his goodness to them, just as you want them to learn of your love for them. You want them to respond in love – and they can only do that in freedom. Love is never given as a bribe, it is given as a gift. And it can only be returned as a free gift.
Our catechists and staff and clergy are here to assist you – not to replace you – in this noble task of handing on the Catholic faith. Please let us know how we can best help and support you in making your response to the Lord. And know that you are models and examples to one another, not because you know everything and are perfect, but because you are seeking to walk in freedom with the Lord who has loved you freely. “As for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.”
