Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up, knelt down before him, and asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, “You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” At that statement his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions. (Mark 10:17,20)

It’s Tuesday morning as I write this brief reflection, and Milton is still far away. By the time you read this, we will know what the storm has done. Many will be in need, and many will be offering help.

The man in the Gospel this Sunday does not come to Jesus in a storm, at least not an external one. His life seems just fine. But he longs for even more. He knows that all this world’s goods cannot satisfy the deepest longing of his heart – eternal life. He asks Jesus the way.

Jesus looks at him with love, knowing it will be hard for this man to let go. But neither the man’s possessions nor his sadness keeps Jesus from calling him: “Come, follow me.” Whether you still have much or have lost much, are seeking help or offering it, Jesus offers you eternal life today. Not a possession, not an accomplishment, but the free gift of his love. He looks on you with love, and not only shows you the way. He is the Way, the Truth, the Life your heart desires. Bring him your questions, and let him look on you with love and speak to your heart today.
