“What were you arguing about on the way?”

The disciples had been arguing about who was the greatest, but they didn’t answer Jesus, not unlike ashamed children, and so he used children to teach them about humility.

Children can be demanding. Babies lack awareness of anything but immediate experience: hungry, thirsty, tired, hurting. Raising children means constant care and investment and often without any immediate gratification; the immediate effect is usually that you yourself experience hunger, thirst, fatigue, and aggravation. But unlike a baby, a mature person is able to freely and willingly sacrifice his own needs for another. And what people do according to nature, Jesus teaches his disciples to do spiritually.

Children are a blessing, but also place demands on men and women to make sacrifices. Not all of us will be parents according to nature, but, like the disciples, all of us must learn to be humble and receive the least and lowliest as Jesus. We can encourage parents and families in our parish, and we can support organizations that assist expectant mothers. Our society often has a confused and conflicted approach to responding to those in need; it is all the more important that our consciences are formed by our faith to recognize and respond to those Jesus has identified with himself.
