Anchored in Hope
What is the basis of our hope? To understand this, let us stop and reflect on “the reasons for our hope” (cf. 1 Pet 3:15).
“I believe in life everlasting”. Hope is “that theological virtue by which we desire… eternal life as our happiness”. As a result, we live our lives in expectation of his return and in the hope of living forever in him. In this spirit, we make our own the heartfelt prayer of the first Christians with which sacred Scripture ends: “Come, Lord Jesus!” ( Rev 22:20).
The death and resurrection of Jesus is the heart of our faith and the basis of our hope. Christian hope consists precisely in this: that in facing death, which appears to be the end of everything, we have the certainty that, thanks to the grace of Christ imparted to us in Baptism, “life is changed, not ended”, forever. Buried with Christ in Baptism, we receive in his resurrection the gift of a new life that breaks down the walls of death, making it a passage to eternity.
Baptism is the dawn of the “eighth day”, the day of the resurrection, a day that transcends the normal, weekly passage of time, opening it to the dimension of eternity and to life everlasting: the goal to which we tend on our earthly pilgrimage (cf. Rom 6:22).
Happiness is our human vocation, a goal to which all aspire. But what is happiness? We aspire to a happiness that is definitively found in the one thing that can bring us fulfilment, which is love. Thus, we will be able to say even now: I am loved, therefore I exist; and I will live forever in the love that does not disappoint, the love from which nothing can ever separate me. Let us listen once more to the words of the Apostle: “I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom 8:38-39).

Anclados en la esperanza
¿Cuál es el fundamento de nuestra espera? Para comprenderlo es bueno que nos detengamos en las razones de nuestra esperanza (cf. 1 P 3,15).
«Creo en la vida eterna». La esperanza, en efecto, «es la virtud teologal por la que aspiramos […] a la vida eterna como felicidad nuestra». Vivamos por tanto en la espera de su venida y en la esperanza de vivir para siempre en Él. Es con este espíritu que hacemos nuestra la ardiente invocación de los primeros cristianos, con la que termina la Sagrada Escritura: «¡Ven, Señor Jesús!» ( Ap 22,20).
Jesús muerto y resucitado es el centro de nuestra fe. La esperanza cristiana consiste precisamente en esto: ante la muerte, donde parece que todo acaba, se recibe la certeza de que, gracias a Cristo, a su gracia, que nos ha sido comunicada en el Bautismo, «la vida no termina, sino que se transforma» para siempre. En el Bautismo, en efecto, sepultados con Cristo, recibimos en Él resucitado el don de una vida nueva, que derriba el muro de la muerte, haciendo de ella un pasaje hacia la eternidad.
En la fuente baustismal se inaugura el octavo día, es decir, el de la resurrección, el día que va más allá del tiempo habitual, marcado por la sucesión de las semanas, abriendo así el ciclo del tiempo a la dimensión de la eternidad, a la vida que dura para siempre. Esta es la meta a la que tendemos en nuestra peregrinación terrena (cf. Rm 6,22).
La felicidad es la vocación del ser humano, una meta que atañe a todos. Pero, ¿qué es la felicidad? Necesitamos una felicidad que se realice definitivamente en aquello que nos plenifica, es decir, en el amor, para poder exclamar, ya desde ahora: Soy amado, luego existo; y existiré por siempre en el Amor que no defrauda y del que nada ni nadie podrá separarme jamás. Recordemos una vez más las palabras del Apóstol: «Porque tengo la certeza de que ni la muerte ni la vida, ni los ángeles ni los principados, ni lo presente ni lo futuro, ni los poderes espirituales, ni lo alto ni lo profundo, ni ninguna otra criatura podrá separarnos jamás del amor de Dios, manifestado en Cristo Jesús, nuestro Señor» (Rm 8,38-39).
